Below are some sounds that could indicate your car needs to be serviced.
High-pitch squeal that only stops when you shut off the engine.
This noise is more than likely an issue with a belt. Fixing it could be as simple as adjusting the belt or replacing it.
Scraping or grinding when applying brakes
If your car used to squeal when you hit the brakes, but now your hear an awful scraping sound, it’s time to replace your brake pads—they’re shot, and metal is scraping against metal. Not only is this an awful sound, but it poses a serious threat to your safety and to the drivers around you.
Clicking in the engine compartment
This sound could be a few things, so if you are experiencing it, it’s important to get your car professionally inspected. It could, and hopefully just be that the engine is low on oil. If your car shows plenty of oil it may be a problem with the oil pressure. If this is not the case, either, it could be related to the valve train.
Whistling coming from under the hood
It is important to try to distinguish if the whistling is coming from inside the vehicle or from under the hood. If the noise seems to be coming from the engine, it may likely be a vacuum leak in one of the hoses. If it sounds like it’s coming from the inside, it may be a simple leak in the weatherstripping.
Clunking sound that happens when you go over a bump
Depending on where the noise is coming from, it could be a few things. If the sound is coming from the rear, it may be a loose tailpipe or muffler. And if it’s happening around your wheels, it may be the shock absorbers and suspension system.
Rumbling sound coming from under the vehicle
This annoying sound is likely a problem with the exhaust system. It could be a defective exhaust pipe, muffler, or catalytic converter. Unless you have a way to safely lift your vehicle up, this is a problem that you should have your auto repair shop check out.
