Timing belt replacement requires precision. We follow manufacturer procedures to ensure your engine timing is set correctly and all related components are inspected or replaced.
1. Access and Inspection
We remove the engine drive belts, timing belt covers, and any components blocking access to the timing belt. We inspect the belt for cracks, fraying, glazing, and missing teeth. We also check for oil leaks from the crankshaft or camshaft seals that could damage the new belt.
2. Component Replacement
We replace the timing belt, tensioner, and idler pulleys. These components wear at the same rate and should always be replaced together. We also replace the water pump because it's behind the timing belt and uses the same labor to access. Replacing it now prevents paying for the same labor twice if it fails later.
3. Timing Verification
We set the engine to top dead center and align the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks according to Honda or Acura specifications. Correct timing is critical. If the timing is off by even one tooth, the engine will run poorly or not start. We verify timing marks before and after installation.
4. Final Checks and Test
After reassembly, we rotate the engine by hand through two complete revolutions to verify timing marks return to the correct position. We reinstall covers and drive belts, refill coolant if the water pump was replaced, and test the engine for proper operation, smooth idle, and no leaks.
